Working with a large business who are looking to add an operations manager to their team, the ideal person will have expeirence of running disab (super suckers), industrial labourers and supervisors. Strong organisation and administritive skills are also required for this role.


Drainage and Industrial Operations Manager Job Description

  • Plan and organise operational staff, drivers and vehicles to meet our customer requirements whilst meeting the target for the business
  • Daily management of all industrial and drainage staff.
  • Creating and supplying of risk assessment, and ensure all staff are working in line with the set risk assessment. (Save all RAMS in the relevant folder)
  • Project management: ensure any big project is pre-planned, and that a suitable supervisor is set responsible to run the project from start to finish.
  • Conduct site visits minimum once a week, to ensure all staff are working compliantly, and using all necessary kit in line with health and safety regulations.
  • Lease and purchase equipment needed for onsite work, and ensure each team is equipped with the correct equipment (Pass all information to the relevant administrator to raise the purchase order and capture the accruals correctly)
  • Work closely with our Health and Safety representative, to ensure your division is fully compliant
  • Keep and build relationships within your industry through platforms like Linkedin, to open the door to new projects
  • Manage our yard. Ensure its tidy and compliant at all times.
  • Be responsible for vehicle routing, efficiency and cost control
  • Make sure customer requirements are adhered to
  • Build a strong relationship with the sales team to ensure we have enough work coming in to keep all teams out working.
  • Make sure plans are in keeping with the Working Time Directive and drivers' hours
  • Make sure that all staff and drivers have all the necessary paperwork and information to carry out their duties
  • Liaison with workshop to support maintenance schedule
  • Keep up to date with legislation
  • Ensure that drivers abide with all regulations, i.e. tachographs, defects, etc
  • Monitoring driver performance
  • Act upon any defect efficiently, and ensure our vehicles are on the road are compliant and roadworthy
  • Keep all customers informed of all failed services or significant delays
  • Make sure every customer receives excellent customer service.
  • Investigating failed services and looking into ways to resolve site issues.
  • Provide the communication link between customers and the staff working on site.
  • Work with several Customer accounts and manage appropriately.
  • Dealing with customer enquiries by email and telephone
  • General administration duties in line with transport legislation, company policies and procedures
  • Ensure all jobs scheduled in are credit checked, and that all the financial information is correct before proceeding with any work.
  • Work closely with our transport manager to ensure all vehicles and staff are always run compliant
  • Be responsible for budgets and spend and keep a close eye on the monthly figures to ensure the division is making a profit.
  • Handling and delegation of out of hours calls during weekends and evenings, and ensure no calls are missed.
  • Implement rotating work schedules or manage the staff and drivers in such a way that they are cooperative to deal with call outs.
  • Be aware of the market and of our competitors.
  • Monitoring of our pricing and ensure we increase our prices where needed.
  • Develop strong relationships with our tip sites, and negotiation of tipping costs.
  • Bring ideas and suggestions to our managing director, for example purchase of vehicles, investments or cost saving ideas to make the division more successful.
  • Be proactive and contact customers to upsell / cross sell our services.
  • Ensure all staff and drivers are working in line with our health and safety rules and regulations
  • Always check our software system before tipping any waste, to ensure all our tipping is compliant and in line with current legislations.
  • Any work subbed must only be subbed to an approved supplier
  • Inspect and scope work for new bookings
  • Bookings added to the schedule must contain all mandatory details needed
  • Process new starters (Inc. interviews, inductions - also send message about PPE/kit bag provision)
  • Process leavers ensuring all ESSL items are retrieved (customer cards, fuel cards, yard keys etc) email HR to P45 including last working day and any deductions for training courses taken.
  • Manage equipment hire to minimise costs.
  • Send daily work texts to the crews for upcoming work
  • Advise admin of any accommodation that needs to be booked
  • Book in annual drainage contract works as advised by Admin



Required skill set

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A background in the industrial sector, with a great understanding of the type of vehicle we are utilising for our industrial division.
  • An understanding of compliance within the transport industry.
  • Ability to build positive working relations with customers, suppliers and colleagues.
  • Must be IT literate (Including working knowledge of Microsoft Excel).
  • The ability to work under pressure within a busy transport office.
  • Experience in an operational role in a logistics or haulage business.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
  • Competent decision making
