How to stay motivated in your job search

  • Publish Date: Posted over 3 years ago

If you’re looking for a new job, the fact that the job market is currently inundated with candidates all competing to land the limited positions available right now, due to Covid-19, can be very frustrating. However, it’s important that you stay positive throughout the job searching process as you will then be able to bounce back more quickly from any stumbling blocks that lie ahead. We understand that this is easier said than done, but here are a few tips to help you stay focused and motivated during your search.

Clear your workspace

Depending on how you like to work, whether that’s searching on your mobile, tablet or computer, a clear mind will no doubt help you concentrate. If you’re using a mobile device turn off your notifications or put them on silent temporarily to avoid distractions. If you typically prefer to be sat at a desk, there is nothing worse than a messy workspace to cloud your mind. Make sure your workspace is tidy and you are free of any distractions and this will no doubt make you more mentally equipped to stay motivated and not come away from the task at hand.

Set yourself realistic goals

Setting some realistic daily goals when searching for a job will help you to stay on track. Make sure they are achievable; you don’t want to take on too much at once only to be frustrated that you’ve not done everything you set out to do. Specific daily goals that are achievable will help you stay productive.

Grow your network

Growing your network and reaching out to like-minded industry professionals can give you a boost of confidence and in some cases could open you up to potential opportunities that you may have never come across on your daily job search.

Learn a new skill

Why not learn something new to increase your chances of getting in front of a potential employer. There are so many online learning platforms to take advantage of, many of which are free so it’s worth looking into. Learning a new skill will get you in the right mindset for when you do find a new job and even better if it’s a skill you can apply in your career.

Take a break

Remember to take a break, if you overwork it can be easy to lose sight of your objectives. Take some time out and consider mixing up your routine to help you stay refreshed and focused. Whatever you decide to do to unwind, make sure it’s something to take your mind away from job hunting. Whether that’s getting some exercise, meeting a friend, or relaxing in front of the TV, you will thank yourself when you get back to your job search feeling well rested and ready to get going again.

Remember you’re not alone

There are so many people in the job market right now so don’t be too hard on yourself if you get knocked back when the competition is so high. The important thing is to keep going and remember that something will eventually come along if you keep at it. Take care of yourself, take these tips onboard and establish a routine that suits you.
