Common mistakes you’re making when applying for a job

Most jobs attract more than one good applicant, so small mistakes can decide who gets the interview.

Whether you’re starting out or have plenty of experience, these are the most common ones, and how to avoid them.

Sending the same CV everywhere

A general CV and cover letter tell an employer you haven’t thought much about their job. They want people who are interested in this role, at this company.

Read the advert, find out about the company, and change your CV and cover letter for each application. Put the skills, experience and achievements that match the job where they can’t be missed.

Not following the instructions

Many adverts ask for something specific: a cover letter, a particular document, or applying through the employer’s own website. Miss it, and your application may be passed over.

It also suggests a lack of attention to detail. Read the instructions carefully and do exactly what they ask. If the advert asks for a cover letter, write one. If it gives a closing date, apply before it.

Going into the interview unprepared

It shows when someone hasn’t done their homework. Find out about the company, understand what the job needs, and practise your answers to the common questions.

Have some questions of your own ready, and show that you want the job. An interviewer will notice if you seem unsure or uninterested.

Forgetting about your network

The people you know in your industry can give you advice, tell you about jobs and recommend you. Some roles are never advertised at all.

Go to industry events, join a trade or professional group, and keep your profile on professional networking sites up to date. Stay in touch with people you’ve worked with.

Not following up

After an interview, send a short email to thank them for their time. It’s polite, and it keeps you in the hiring manager’s mind.

If you’ve heard nothing after applying, it’s fine to check in. A polite message shows you’re still interested and sets you apart from other applicants. If you applied through a recruiter, ask your consultant to follow up for you.
