If you feel ready for the next step in your engineering career, there’s a lot you can do to give yourself an edge. Here are the things worth thinking about.
Set yourself some goals
Get a clear picture of where you want to go. You might want to learn a completely new skill, step up into a more senior role, or one day run your own business. Only you can decide.
Once you know what you want, set goals that will get you there and give yourself realistic deadlines. Write them down and check your progress now and then.
Work on your soft skills
Qualifications matter, but they aren’t everything. Employers also look for people who can work in a team, solve problems and communicate clearly.
The right qualifications together with strong soft skills will put you in the running for many more roles. Look for chances to practise them: lead a small project, help train a newer colleague, or explain a problem to another team.
Keep learning
Technology in engineering keeps changing, so every engineer needs to keep learning, whether they want to move up or not. Some simple ways to stay current:
- Join webinars on subjects in your field
- Complete a training course
- Read about the latest research and developments in your industry
Keeping up to date shows employers you take your work seriously, and it prepares you for the roles you want next.
Build your network
Connecting with other engineers is a good way to hear about opportunities you might otherwise never know about.
- Start conversations with engineers in your field
- Keep in touch with former colleagues
- Look out for networking events you can go to
Networking works both ways. You only get out of it what you put in, so be ready to share what you know and help others too.
Ask for opportunities
Don’t be afraid to ask for new opportunities where you work now. Let your employer know you’re keen to learn new skills and take on new challenges.
That way, when something comes up, they’ll know you’re ready to step up and take on more responsibility.
