Good engineers have choices, and many think twice before moving. If you want the best people to apply, you need to give them a reason.
People at different stages of their career want different things. Some put flexibility first, some want room to grow, and some want to be trusted to work on their own. Here is how to make your role and your business appeal to them.
Be clear about the role
Engineers want to know what they’re signing up for. Set out the purpose of the role, what it covers and who they’ll work with.
Give them problems worth solving
The best engineers want interesting work. Tell them about the problems you need solving and the projects they can get their teeth into.
Show them where it leads
Set out a clear path for progression. If people can see where the job could take them, they’re more likely to join, and more likely to stay.
Show the pay
Pay still makes or breaks most decisions to move. Find out what similar employers pay for the role, and make sure your offer holds up.
Then put the pay in the advert. Candidates expect to see it, and a missing pay range can put good people off.
Be clear on benefits
A good benefits package helps. It might include a pension, flexible hours, or remote working where the role allows. Say clearly what you offer, so people don’t have to guess.
Training and mentoring
Training and mentoring help people picture their future with you. Set out the training on offer and how new starters are supported as they learn.
Know what makes you different
Think about why someone should work for you rather than a competitor. It might be your values, the work you do or how you treat your people. Leave out the small perks and focus on what really sets you apart.
Then say it clearly in your adverts and on your website, so candidates know what kind of place they’re joining.
Think about your culture
Culture is how it feels to work for you every day. A busy, lively workplace suits many people, but engineers often need quiet space to concentrate. If you don’t have it, look for ways to make some.
Keep the process moving
Speed matters. Good candidates don’t wait long, and a slow decision can mean losing them to another offer.
If your preferred candidate does get another offer, think about what would make them choose you. It might be the pay, flexible working or something else that matters to them. Ask, and see what you can do.
