How to find the right engineering employer for you

Finding the right engineering employer can be hard. Whether you’re starting out or looking for a new challenge, it’s worth weighing up your options carefully.

Where you work can shape your whole career. If you have goals in mind, make sure the company you join can help you reach them. Here are the things to think about.

Workplace culture

As an engineer you’ll work closely with people across the business, so a positive, supportive culture matters. Culture is shaped by a company’s values, how it communicates and how it’s led.

Do your research and ask questions before you commit. Look for a company whose values are close to yours.

Work-life balance

A poor balance between work and home can quickly take the shine off a job, however much you enjoy the work.

Think about what matters to you. Will the hours fit around your home life and give you the time off you need?

Company size

Large and small firms both have pros and cons. There’s no right or wrong answer, but knowing the differences helps you focus your search.

Larger firms

Larger firms may offer more benefits, stability, training and opportunities. But they can be slower to change, with less room to put forward new ideas, and it can be harder to get noticed.

Smaller firms

Smaller firms are often more open to new ideas, and it’s usually easier to talk to the people who run the business. You get to know everyone, and it can feel like a community.

On the other hand, they may not offer the same opportunities, and the route to promotion or a pay rise isn’t always clear. Ask how people progress before you join.

Location and travel

Think about how far you’re willing to travel. That means your daily commute, and also whether the job involves moving between sites or travelling abroad.

Some roles need engineers who can be flexible, so check it fits with your home life. Whatever the job involves, make sure the travel is manageable.

The clients you’ll work with

Over your career you may work with all kinds of clients, from large international companies to small local businesses. Think about the kind of work you’d find satisfying, and whether this employer’s clients offer it.

Pay and benefits

Some employers show the pay in the job advert. Others only discuss it once you’re in the interview process.

Find out what the role usually pays in your area, so you have a figure in mind when the subject comes up. Ask about benefits too, such as the pension, healthcare and holiday.

Room to grow

If you know where you want to be, you can judge whether a company will help you get there. Ask yourself:

  • Will I learn the skills I need?
  • Will I gain the right experience?
  • Will I meet the right people to help me reach my goals?

Most people work for several employers over their career, so think about where each move will lead.
