Many employers use video interviews, particularly in the early stages of hiring. They can make the process quicker, because it’s easier to find a time that suits everyone.
A video interview matters just as much as one in person, so prepare for it in the same way. Here’s how to make sure it goes smoothly.
Choose the right place
Pick a quiet room where you won’t be disturbed. You want the interviewer to focus on you, so sit in front of a plain, tidy background.
Get the lighting right
The interviewer needs to see you clearly. A window behind you will put your face in shadow, so sit facing the window if you can.
If the room is dark, use a lamp, and test your camera beforehand so you can adjust it.
Set up the technology early
You don’t want to be stressed on the day because the software isn’t installed or your internet is slow. Get everything ready well before the interview:
- Check your internet connection is reliable
- Find out which video call software the employer uses, and install it
- Test your webcam and your sound
- Close other apps that might make notification sounds
Dress as you would in person
Dress smartly from head to toe, just as you would for an interview in person. First impressions count, and it puts you in the right frame of mind.
Mind your body language
Your body language still matters on screen. Sit up straight, don’t slouch, and rest your arms on the desk or in your lap.
When you’re speaking, look into the camera rather than at the interviewer on the screen, so your eyes meet theirs. When you’re listening, you can look back at the screen. Nod now and then to show you’re paying attention.
Keep your screen clear
Don’t search for answers online during the interview. However careful you think you are, the interviewer will notice. Looking away from the screen too often can also make it seem as if you haven’t prepared.
All you need in front of you is:
- A copy of your CV
- A glass of water
- Something to take notes with
Have a back-up plan
However well you prepare, things can still go wrong. Your connection might drop, or your sound might cut out.
Ask for a phone number before the interview. If anything goes wrong, you can call to let them know and agree what to do next.
