How to stay motivated in your job search

Looking for a new job can be frustrating, especially when competition for roles is strong. Staying positive helps you bounce back from setbacks more quickly.

That’s easier said than done, so here are some practical ways to stay focused and keep going.

Clear your space

A clear space helps you think clearly. Whether you search on your phone, a tablet or a computer, cut out distractions while you work.

  • Put your phone on silent, or turn off notifications for a while
  • Tidy your desk before you start
  • Close anything you don’t need, so you can concentrate on the task in front of you

Set realistic goals

Set yourself a few specific goals each day. It might be tailoring your CV for a particular job, applying for roles that suit you, or following up on an application.

Keep them achievable. Taking on too much only leaves you frustrated when you can’t get it all done. Small goals you can tick off will keep you moving.

Grow your network

Get in touch with people in your industry: former colleagues, people you’ve worked with and others in your field. Talking to them can give your confidence a lift.

Sometimes it leads to opportunities you would never have found on job sites.

Learn something new

Use the time to learn a new skill. There are plenty of online courses and learning platforms worth looking into.

Learning keeps you in the right frame of mind for when you start your next job. If it’s a skill you can use in your career, even better: it can help you stand out to employers.

Take a break

If you push too hard, it’s easy to lose sight of what you’re aiming for. Build breaks into your day and mix up your routine to stay fresh.

Do something that takes your mind off job hunting, whether that’s exercise, meeting a friend or relaxing in front of the TV. You’ll come back to your search rested and ready to go again.

Remember you’re not alone

Lots of people are looking for work at any one time, so don’t be hard on yourself if you get knocked back. What matters is that you keep going.

Look after yourself, take these tips on board and find a routine that suits you.
