Few people find one job that lasts their whole career. Most move on at some point, but knowing when is the hard part.
Whether you want a step up or you’re simply not happy where you are, these are the common signs that it might be time to start looking.
You dread Monday morning
Everyone has the odd Monday when they’d rather stay at home. But if the thought of going back fills you with dread every week, take notice.
When you’re unhappy at work, it often shows in how you work, too. A job you enjoy makes the whole week feel different.
There’s nowhere to go next
If you’re waiting for a step up, be honest with yourself about how likely it is, and how soon. Plenty of people stay put hoping for a promotion, then look back and realise they haven’t moved on at all.
You may like the people and the place. But if the job can’t give you the career you want, you’re more likely to find it somewhere else.
The work no longer challenges you
Maybe you’re good at your job, but the day-to-day work no longer stretches you. Before you look elsewhere, ask your manager about training, new responsibilities or a new project.
If there’s nothing on offer, it may be time to find a role that keeps you learning.
Stress has become normal
Some pressure at work is normal. Feeling stressed every day isn’t.
If you’re overworked, short of support and can’t see things getting better, it’s worth looking for a job that doesn’t wear you down.
You’re already thinking about leaving
If you keep asking yourself whether now is the time to move on, that’s often a sign in itself.
It’s natural to put it off. Updating your CV, going to interviews and the uncertainty of change can all feel like a lot. But that part doesn’t last long, and a better working life does.
Looking doesn’t commit you to anything. You can see what’s out there before you decide.
