Why choose a career in engineering?

Do you want work that lets you be creative, solve hard problems and see the difference you make? Then a career in engineering could suit you.

Engineering is behind almost everything we use, from the phone in your pocket to the car you drive. It takes time, effort and commitment, but it gives a lot back. Here’s why.

A wide choice of careers

Engineers are needed right across the economy, and the skills you build travel well. Solving problems, thinking logically and creatively, communicating and working in a team are valued everywhere.

That opens up a wide range of industries, including:

  • Manufacturing
  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Rail
  • Marine

Whatever interests you, there’s likely to be engineering work in it.

Pay that grows with you

Skilled engineers are valued, and pay usually reflects that. It tends to rise as you build experience, take on responsibility and add qualifications.

Challenge and creativity

Engineers use maths, science, technology and creative thinking every day. The hardest problems rarely have a textbook answer, so it’s up to you to find one that works and explain why it’s the right one.

Technology moves quickly, so you keep learning. Days are rarely the same.

The chance to travel

Engineering is a global industry, and projects happen all over the world. In some sectors, such as oil and gas, travel is part of the job.

If that appeals, find out which areas offer it before you choose your path.

Working as part of a team

Very few engineers work alone. You’ll work with other engineers, with clients and with colleagues across the business, so teamwork matters.

It’s also where you learn most. Working alongside skilled people means your knowledge keeps growing, and you get to be part of projects you couldn’t deliver on your own.

Is it right for you?

There’s a lot to learn, and the road can be long. But if you’re ready to put in the work, engineering offers varied careers, good prospects, the chance to be creative and the satisfaction of seeing what you’ve helped to build.
