About the Company:

Metalis Engineering Recruitment are currently supporting a a well-established engineering firm specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke fixtures, jigs, handling solutions, and tool storage systems for some of the world's leading automotive and aerospace brands, including Ford, Aston Martin, Red Bull F1, and more.

From one-off fabrication pieces to turnkey international installations, they design for challenge, functionality, and precision.

Backed by a USA based parent company, the business handles operations outside North America and supply solutions to customers across Europe, Asia, and beyond.

The Role:

We're looking for a talented SolidWorks Design Engineer to join their team. The role is hands-on and highly varied - no two projects are the same. From assembly trolleys and bespoke jig fixtures to complex lifting equipment, you'll be working directly with customer specs to design real-world engineering solutions.

This role would suit someone with strong SolidWorks experience and a passion for bespoke, problem-solving design work - not repetitive CAD drafting.

We are seeking someone who is flexible, you must be willing to help across other business functions when not designing, this could be anything from costings, admin support or general office tasks.

Part time hours could be available for the right person, should this be a preference.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create innovative, practical designs based on customer requirements and/or reverse- engineered from sample parts or 3D files.
  • Design bespoke mechanical fixtures, trolleys, jigs, cabinets, and handling systems.
  • Collaborate with the shop floor and engineering teams to ensure manufacturability of designs.
  • Consider mechanical factors such as load balance, gas struts, weight distribution, counterbalancing, safety, etc.
  • Tweak and adapt existing product designs to meet unique customer applications.
  • Liaise with production, subcontractors, and customers where required to support design and delivery.
  • Occasionally assist in scoping out projects on-site

What We're Looking For:

  • SolidWorks proficiency essential (2D & 3D design).
  • Strong general engineering knowledge - ideally with experience designing for manufacture.
  • Experience designing jigs, fixtures, trolleys, cabinets, or mechanical assemblies.
  • Comfortable working on bespoke, one-off projects with minimal hand-holding.
  • Ability to problem-solve and take ownership of design challenges from concept to completion.
  • Automotive, motorsport, aerospace, or precision engineering experience is a bonus.
  • Able to liaise with shop floor staff and work in a collaborative environment.

Perks & Flexibility:

  • Relaxed and supportive engineering environment
  • Opportunity to work with elite automotive and aerospace clients
  • Annual company profit bonus - subject to performance
  • Occasional project visits to F1, OEM, and aerospace sites
  • Role can be made flexible (e.g., 3-day week) for the right person
